Dog
Packing in National Parks
Visiting
national parks was an idea I reserved for the far distant
future, when I could no longer carry all I needed to be
safely self sufficient in remote wilderness areas. Although
no longer able to backpack I looked forward to an active
retirement. Now that I want to visit national parks with
the pack carrying assistance of my canine companion I
find that dogs as pets are not permitted outside
of developed areas in national parks.
The
book describes how one puppy became a trail/pack dog,
how his person planned and prepared the team for back
country travel in national parks, and how one person explored
her eligibility and declared her right to be accompanied
by a service/pack dog where dogs as pets are not permitted.
It explains how some of the problems in gaining legal
acceptance were dealt with and resolved, leading to access
for all qualified individuals accompanied by a service
dog, as defined by the Americans With Disabilities
Act.
The
author is just an ordinary person with a story to share.
Jane has hiked, backpacked and cross country skied all
her life. She has led outings for the Mazamas (Portland
based mountain climbing club) and the Portland Chapter
of the Oregon Nordic Club. Now limited in what she can
carry, she continues to hike, ski and travel hut-to-hut
in National Parks with the pack-carrying assistance
of her service/trail dog Trigger.

“Dog
Packing In National Parks by canine travel expert Jane
Cox is not simply another how-to guide for traveling with
a canine companion; rather it is the personal and engaging
memoir of one person who trained a puppy to become a faithful
trail/pack dog. Touching upon expectations of dogs and
dog owners; proper preparations for traveling in back
country; the rewards of properly training one's pooch;
and much, much more, Dog Packing In National Parks is
an enjoyable and thoroughly "reader friendly"
recommendation for those who delight in hiking through
nature with their canine companions.” –
